The most critical step in using a slip lead is ensuring it can loosen instantly when pressure is released.
  1. Stand your dog on your left side. Hold the lead up so it forms the letter "P" (not a "q").
  2. Slip the loop over your dog's head from the front.

This alignment allows the ring to slide freely down and release tension immediately when you slacken the lead. If placed backward, the rope will bind in the ring and stay tight.

  1. Slide the lead high up on the neck, tucked right behind the ears and directly under the jawline.
